That's How it Goes...

Our first week of calving was rough. After all we did for Prudence it just wasn't quite enough :( when a calf doesn't get colostrum in the first 6 hours of life their chance of survival is greatly reduced. 

Every half hour after birth that colostrum feeding is delayed, antibody transfer decreases by about 5%. A calf that does not drink until 6 hr old has then already lost the opportunity for 30% of the possible antibodies entering its bloodstream. 

Prudence died on Sunday. It was very sad, the kids loved her already. Saturday morning we had a calf born dead, again that was sad...Jared wants to be able to do all he can, but it's hard when you miss it by mere minutes. 

On a positive note we do have three healthy rambunctious calves running around. I suppose there needs to be a balance in all things, but it is still sad.
