Night at Grandpa's and Hematology

After swimming with the Atwood's, the kids and I headed over to Grandpa Glen's for the night!  The boys were excited for a sleep over.  Calum especially likes it because he got a room all to himself!!  Dad took the couch and Emry and Armin and I slept in his bed.  Kinda squishy but we managed, not unlike our sleeping arrangements at home when Armin comes and crawls in with Jared and I!!  Anyway, I didn't sleep great, I think I saw the clock at every hour.  I was worried about over sleeping and missing Emry's hematology appointment.  I should have known better, Emry is always awake on time because of her alarm, she woke me up from a dead sleep promptly at 7:30am!!

We watched the movie "Wonder" before we all headed off to bed, well except Grandpa and Calum, who decided at 10pm they needed to cook a frozen pizza for a midnight snack!!  Lucky boy!!  Wonder was an excellent show and kept the interest of us all.  It was very heart warming!!

The next morning, Grandpa made Emry and I a very yummy smoothie and gave us a croissant for breakfast.  The boys and him would be going to McDonald's for pancakes after Emry and I left for her appointment!

At her appointment we were told to stop the blood thinner injection once we were finished what was given to us after her surgery.  Yay!!!  Emry was excited about that, as the needles have really bruised her tummy.  They didn't really hurt but the look of the bruises were concerning, to the hematology doctor too!!!  I guess Emry should have been putting pressure on the insertion site for at least 10 minutes, not her typical 30 seconds!!  Oops!!!  Who has time to sit for 10 minutes with pressure on their tummy??  Her red blood cells are smaller than they should be which means she is iron deficient, but they hope to increase her iron stores by having us increase iron rich foods in her diet, instead of iron supplements.  So that too was good news!

It was a long drive up to the Children's hospital for that appointment, even after staying in Calgary for the night!!  Emry and I headed over to Market Mall to do a little looking around, neither of us were really in the shopping mood though so we decided to head back to Grandpa's.

It was great spending the night at Grandpa's house, it prevented us from having to leave our house ultra early for Emry's appointment and it gave the boys some time with Grandpa too!!  I am thankful for the medical care Emry is receiving for her broken wrist, we truly are lucky to have the Health Care we do.  I am also thankful to a willing Dad who took time off from his work to host us for a night!!  I couldn't be more blessed!!

Swimming With the Atwood's

For Family Day we decided to take the kids swimming!  We just weren't sure where!!!  Then I remembered Emry had an early morning appointment in Calgary the day after Family Day, so we decided to go to Calgary the day before and the kids and I would stay over with my dad.  And since we were going to Calgary who better to spend the day with than the Atwood's?!  Luckily they didn't have any plans and readily agreed to go swimming with us!  We went to the Southland Leisure Centre where they have waves and water slides.  When we got there we were sure we wouldn't be getting in, the line up to pay was long and there were already a ton of people in the pool!  But luck was on our side and we did get in!  It was busy!!!  I hung out with Emry since I totally forgot she couldn't get her cast wet, Lalainia actually reminded me, oops!!  But Jason saran wrapped it and taped it good.  We waded in the big pool up to our waists, went to the hot tub a couple of times and hung out in the kiddie pool with Cadence for a bit.  It was still lots of fun, she didn't complain once!!

Jared hung out with Bowen and Armin and said it was hilarious being with Bow.  He would stand facing Jared and talk to him the whole time, even when the waves were going, he just went up and down and talked and talked!  He would also tread water but when he got tired he would just put his hand on Jared's shoulder and rest for a bit before going back to treading water!!!  It was funny to see.  Bowen is such a character!!!  Jared said he likes that his nephews feel comfortable enough with him to do that!!  It made him feel special!

Ashton and Calum hung out together, which was really good for them as they don't get that chance very often!  Calum was being a true gentleman and would retrieve the big ball for everyone standing in line and then after everyone had a turn he would go!!  Ashton helped too when Calum was in the water.  What examples those Atwood boys are, love them so much, so glad we went with them and our kids have a relationship with their Calgary cousins!!!

After swimming we all headed over to Dairy Queen for some supper and dessert.  The kids were at one table and us adults at the other!!  So much fun.  The kids laughed while they ate and just loved being with each other!

It was a wonderful Family Day, spent with those we love.  It was great getting together with the Atwood's, hopefully we can do it again soon!!

Up and Away!

After a 2 hour delay due to mechanical issues, Myrna was finally able to fly to Salt Lake where she was being picked up by a family friend to go to the MTC (Missionary Training Centre) in Provo.

Her original flight was scheduled to leave at 2:05pm Sunday but because of mechanical issues that flight was cancelled.  She did however sit in the plane on the tarmac for 2 hours before they cancelled.  Her flight was rescheduled for Tuesday at 2:05pm and after a half hour delay she was boarded and on her way!!  She made it to the MTC in time for a devotional, which she said was excellent, but was a little afraid of getting lost there!!

It was a teary goodbye on Sunday.  Calum and I just couldn't hold back the tears.  She will sure be missed but we are so proud of her for the decision she has made to serve a mission for our Church and her Heavenly Father.  What a great example to her grand kids who will one day be serving missions, if their Grandma can do it so can they!! The 18 months will go by fast and Montreal is lucky to have such a wonderful woman, a true example of our Savior.

Yucky!!

On Friday we took Emry to Calgary to have her cast changed.  Jared was able to get the day off work because the weather had turned nasty the day before and the roads had the potential of being rotten.  The roads however, were just fine.  But I am so happy he came!!  They took the splint cast off Emry and her and I both could not look at what was underneath.  Jared loved every minute of it, he took pictures for us so we could see later what it looked like with the pins.  It did hurt a little taking the cast off, I could see the pain on Emry's face!  The gauze that was under the pins was stuck with dried blood and they had to manipulate it off around the pins.  Ouch!!

It totally did not look like I was expecting it to look.  I pictured pins with teeny tiny screw heads.  But the pins were super long and curved on the top!!  The pins go through good bone into the bone graft and anchor into more good bone!  In 4 weeks at her next appointment they will change the cast again and take an X-ray.  If the pins have scooted down further into the good bone they will pull them out a tiny bit.  Jared will be coming to that appointment too, if it was just Emry and I I'm sure I'd be passed out on the floor!!

In 6 to 8 weeks from now they will likely take the pins right out.  Dr. Braurer would like to see them stay in for another 8 weeks, but if they have started to wiggle free she will take them out in 6 weeks.  I really hope they knock Emry out for that, it's going to be painful!

I am proud of how strong Emry has been, she is a real trooper.  She even manages to still help out around the house.  I love her to bits and am still very sorry I didn't take her into the doctor when she first started complaining about the pain!

Family Reunion of Sorts!!

On Sunday, January 28th, Myrna spoke in church along with Dave, they spoke about the Temple and were excellent talks.  After hearing them I made a pact with myself that I would go more often this year.  I always feel so at peace in the temple, I'm not sure why I don't make it more of a priority.

Anyway, because Myrna would be leaving for her mission soon, us girls in the family put together a luncheon after church that day.  There were lots of extra people who came just to say farewell.  Lalainia had a tried and true pulled pork recipe (though we used beef!!), Myrna made all the buns.  Ladies from the ward made salads and some brought squares.  It turned out to be a fabulous meal with lots of visiting all around.  It was great to see old members of our ward come back and to catch up with them.

After everyone left we took some family pictures.  Our Bishop was the last non member of our family left in the building and he took the big family picture.  Then we broke it into individual families and then the grand kids with Grandma!!  Everyone was able to be there, even Cora!!

I am sure going to miss Myrna for the next eighteen months.  But I know she will be greatly blessed as she serves our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.  And what an example she is to her grand kids who will soon be serving missions!!  I love her so much and am so thankful for her in my life.  I couldn't ask for a better mother in law, friend or sister in the gospel.  Montreal is gaining a great sister.

Emry's Surgery

Emry had been complaining for quite some time that her wrist was bothering her.  I didn't make an appointment for her to see the doctor because I thought it would go away.  But it didn't, and she then started asking me daily if I had made an appointment for her.  I finally did one November day in hopes that the doctor would say nothing is wrong.  Well, when I heard the words it's definitely broken my heart sunk.  It was decided to cast it in hopes it wouldn't get worse and the very next week we were in to see a specialist in Calgary.

In Calgary they took the cast off since it really wasn't doing anything.  The bone had already regrown trying to heal.  But it did it in the wrong way.  Surgery would need to be done to fix it properly.  Since it was basketball season and Emry loves basketball they put the surgery off until the end of January.  Emry also had to see a hematologist because it turns out she is also Factor V Leiden, just like me, only she is heterozyegous, meaning she only carries one gene. I am homozyegous, I carry both genes.  So the risk of clotting during surgery is lower than mine but still a risk.

We were able to see the Hematologist and get a date set for surgery, January 25 would be the day.  It came very quickly and made Emry very nervous.  But she was a trooper and was very brave.  She even decided she could go off without Jared or I into the operating room where they put her to sleep.  I would have liked to have gone but knew she needed to do it alone.  Jared and I waited for a long three hours for the surgery to be done.  But once she was in recovery and waking up we were able to talk to the surgeon, Dr. Braurer. She said that the injury was actually about two years old and started to hurt her more now because it was healing wrong and was bugging her to bend it.  The gap to fill after cleaning all the scar tissue out and bone was about 1cm wide.  Bigger than she was expecting.  Emry woke up quite nauseous and did throw up a little when we got her up to get dressed.  We gave her some gravol and hoped that would help.  It did and after letting it work and having her rest a little more we were finally able to go home.  We were at the children's hospital at 10am and left at 6:30pm.  It was a long day but she is now on the mend.

We have been keeping with a strict regime of tylenol every 4 hours and so far the pain is manageable.  The pain in her hip was the worst the next day after surgery, they took a bone graft from her left hip to put in her wrist.  They said she'd be up and walking no problem, but it was bugging her to walk for the first few days.  She used a crutch during the worst of it but is now walking no problem.  This week at school has been exam week so I've been picking Emry up after her exams and bringing her home to rest.  Her left arm gets pretty sore after being down too much.

Everyday she gets stronger, she will have to wear a cast for 8-12 weeks.  There are three pins holding the bone graft in and they want to make sure it stays in place.  Those pins will come out after 10 weeks.  I am so proud of her and how brave and strong she has been.  It was definitely scary for me to watch her go through surgery, but I knew she was in good hands and would be well taken care of.
